From Zakir:
The concept of "taal" or rhythm is a cyclical one. In a sense, the musician
is traveling in a circle, since he/she is required to state his arrival at the
"sum" or first beat of the rhythm cycle. In the drum repertoire, there are many
types of compositions which manifest this cyclical aspect. For instance, in "kaida,"
"peshkar" and "rela," which Zakir will demonstrate, the composition is split in half,
each mirroring the other, and the music can be visualized with the rhythm cycle circling
as the equator does around the earth.
